So you don't find it irresponsible to publish an article with absolutely no information about the game that said article is about? Let alone one where you just state that the franchise that lead up to the game should have never been as popular as it was and write misinformation about the game based purely on speculation and a one minute trailer? That is fine when you are doing it in a forum but when you are getting paid for it that shouldn't fly. Xbox World had no story to run and every other game magazine, website and TV show were going with MK so they had to come up with something. Paul Randall should have done his job and collected the information that the Netherrealm Studios team had put out there or should have passed the job to some one that could. Granted some members on the boards don't express their anger at his irresponsible writing as well as others but their anger isn't misplaced or unjustified. The people who should be most upset and outraged by this story shouldn't be the MK fans or Netherrealm Studios, It should be Xbox World themselves because all mister Randall did is hurt their creditability.

I wouldn't call it irresponsible, just the typical stupidity that's common with most so-called journalists (which comprise over 90% of the games press). The language towards the end was basically internet troll-caliber after all. Furthermore, I wouldn't call it "a joke to attract attention". Had it been an online blog or site then certainly, but this is good old fashioned print that you have to buy. Blogs like Kotaku and especially Destructoid use that tactic often, and it works.

I remember EGM pulling the same kind of crap circa 1998 when the MK4 home versions hit. Among the barrage of insults was proclaiming that the series should've ended with MK3 because it's never as deep or fun as SF. Granted, MK4 isn't the series' highest point but it was certainly uncalled for.

EDIT: I guess I can sum things up with the following: Good or bad, never take "pro" reviews of fighters seriously because few reviewers understand the intricacies of fighters. Either read some fighter fan impressions or play the game yourself to get a good feel. If you're having fun, you're in business.

Exactly what Umon said; Don't take it seriously. Besides, the article wasn't an article describing the intricacies of the game, it was an article about Paul Randall's anticipation towards the game. You can't expect every article about a game to describe the complete ins and outs of the game. Yes, Paul Randall is a member of Xbox World, but his amp-o-meter articles are purely opinion-based. Besides, he DID mention most of the guts of the game, so I wouldn't really criticize the article because of that. He mentioned the history, as well as the main features of the game. Don't get pasty because he didn't specifically say "X-Ray Mode".
 
Bah! Magazines like that should print the truth not their fanboy ideas. The guy hasn't played the game, he's seen the trailer. He is assuming stuff to sell magazines.

Going by the statement I'd say books about writing articles for magazines that no one ever reads unless their game is in it which it probably won't be but they still have to check it out just in case 'cause if they didn't they might miss that last bit of information that they have been looking for on nerdy forums for 4 weeks while taking shots at the developers while drinking shots with the developers behind the scenes which is spooky enough anyhow.
Or maybe he meant "who writes these articles these days".
 
It's hard if not impossible to find unbiased writing about entertainment, telling people what's good and what's bad. Our experiences with video games are largely subjective, there isn't a scientific measurement as to what makes a game enjoyable. It doesn't help that publications are also may have conflicts of interest since they may have ties with video game developers who buy ads or provide perks such as inside information. With so many games to cover in short amount of time, many writers don't have the time to cover every bit of content in a given game. It can take months after a fighting game's release before the community finds all the intricacies of a fighting game.

Well this article isn't at all about intricacies or inadequate information. It's downright insulting. It's a gaming journalist making snide comments about a game he's had very little time to inspect. It's unprofessional.
 
Oh, I agree with you. However, I was trying to point out you can't take much stock in video game journalism in general. Video game journalism isn't known for its objectivity or maturity in tone.

BTW, I admit I went off a tangent towards the end, since this article is a preview and not a review. At the back of my head, I still thinking about how writers throw around buzzwords like "deep" but never get into the specifics...much to my chagrin.

I've liked elements of Shao Kahns looks in all his recent appearances, but I must say his MKSM look is overall my least favorite. I like the boots, hate the gloves, and REALLY hate the helmet. This latest design has a lot of interesting aspects, such as the chain mail. That's new. The smaller skull adornments and segmented arm guards are very welcome indeed.

The only parts of it I'm not 100% sold on are the loin cloth and the helmet. The helmet is indeed very different from any of his previous designs. I personally like his helmets from MK2/3 and MKD (they're basically the same). The new gold emblem is very off-putting. And the mask portion doesn't cover as much of his face as it has in the past, showing much more of his cheeks and jawbone. I don't like that either. Also, I prefer his segmented leather loin cloth to this one made of actual cloth.

I actually like the IN GAME MKSM look, have you noticed that alot of stuff in MKSM is totally different from the renders? IE: Scorpion, Shao Kahn.
