So what characters belong to what faction?

So in terms of MKX 'lore', what characters are in what factions? only one i know for sure i think is spec ops, which i believe is the cage family, briggs family, kenshi...

But I have to say, I don't think I'll ever understand how NRS arrived at the 5 factions they have for MKX. Sub-Zero gets a faction but Scorpion doesn't? Kano and Tremor get a faction, but Kotal/Erron/Reptile/Ferra/Torr/Ermac/D'Vorah don't? OK, they want to focus on the "classic" factions, well where's the love for Mileena/Goro/Baraka?

I just don't even know.

I think they intentionally went with only Earthrealm factions for a number of reasons. This is kinda stated in the video NRS put out today. As we know, your faction is invaded by other realms (like the Chaosrealm), so it makes sense that Earthrealm factions come under attack from them. It wouldn't make sense if you could be invaded by Outworld while you were in Kotal's faction, for example. Also, sounds dumb, but maybe NRS feels we can relate more/feel more personally involved if it's an Earth group at stake, because that's where we're from.

Two discrepancies, though:

1) Brotherhood of Shadow is not from Earthrealm. So it's dumb if you're BoS and the Netherrealm invades you.

2) Why not Shirai Ryu? This one really confuses me. Ed Boon must like them more and there are more Shirai Ryu characters on the roster than there are Lin Kuei. Could it be because the Lin Kuei have more story presence? Because they actually have a stage/an arena of their own?

I'm as confused as you are. It would be interesting to hear NRS' comments on this.

By that logic, Goro shouldn't have four arms in MKX.

There is a time period during the events of MKX, which might even be shown in Scorpion's or Takeda's flashbacks, in which the Shirai Ryu is rebuilt. That's plenty reason for it to exist as a faction.

Thanks for linking! Not unexpected. I like that it's going to take time. Ideally, Kittelsen would time jump to after MKX before giving Goro his arms back, both to explain his absence from MKX and to give him some time to really stew in his humiliation. But I doubt NRS would let him go off into uncharted territory.

But my point still stands. There are plenty of non-canon events in gameplay (e.g. certain primary costumes); characters who die in the story don't disappear from the roster; so there's no compelling reason why the Shirai Ryu couldn't have been a faction, that I can see.
 
Lol @ Black Dragon and it's manpower. Kano and Clint Eastwood Wannabe seems to be only playable guys from BD.

Unless they "patch" them with cooperators like Kotal ofc.

EDIT: Oh, and Tremor too.
