Mortal Kombat X battle damage?

There is battle damage in the game already, but it's a lot more subtle than MK9's, to fit in with MKX's less clownish atmosphere. I heard that devs described MK9's absurdly exaggerated battle damage as "shark bites."

MK9's battle damage was awful; glad it's not returning. Instead, we're apparently getting something more realistic and not over-the-top, but we haven't seen much of the new damage system.

I've seen a couple instances of it. One being a battle between D'Vorah and Cassie. When Cassie performed her fatality, you could see detailed holes in her chest region from D'Vorah's stingers. Her grab in the middle of the match caused the marks to appear.

It's in there alright. It's just really subtle right now.

For me, it's too subtle. Mortal Kombat has rarely been about subtleties and I actually wish the damage was a bit more like the last game to be honest. You have fights were things like this happen to the fighters on a frequent basis. It's not a stretch to think the fighters would have chunks of flesh sheared off as a result from the brutal fights that take place in Mortal Kombat.

I was thinking for MKX instead of having it either damaged or undamaged (with the more memory of new gen consoles) they would have a system in place where maybe it was Undamaged > Slightly Damaged > Damaged > MK9 level of damage.

While I hope the damage is less subtle by the time the game releases, I'm pretty sure the toned down damage is a result of the new gore system for Fatalities. With the old system still in place, it would just complicate things like the face sliding down correctly during Scorpion's Fatality and who knows what other bugs it would introduce.

I would wait until we see some full HD footage from newer builds closer to release before really judging the system, but as it stands it's still a little too subtle for my tastes. Still better than any other fighter though where no bruises or anything appear...

From what we've seen i like it. Theres blood spatter and ripped clothing but NO CHUNKS of skin missing. That was the awful in MK9. I do like having damage but they are being more reality based with i think is awesome. As long as there is not a huge chunk of there thigh missing while they fight, im sure all will be well

The battle damage in MK9 was a little too ridiculous, but it makes sense. It just looks funny.
I purposely play in Sindel's alternate because her battle damage is hysterical.

i dont think the level of damage was over the top in MK9 its just the way they designed it made the characters look like zombies and kinda silly at times.

i think its possible to have the same level of damage while having the character model still look good in the game, MK9 for example some wounds looked good and some looked bad. in my opinion the big round areas of missing flesh looked bad, most the face damage was bad, but some of the cuts and slices looked fine, and a bit of bruising here and there looked ok.

i dont think its a case of making the damage more subtle but just being more careful with where and where not to put the damage. you could have a character be brutally wounded without them looking like a zombie if you carefully/thoughtfully plan out where and where not to put the damage on the model for it to look good.

For anyone who hasn't read it before: in a local gaming magazine there was an interview with Steve Beran @E3. He said it even then that they dropped the so-called shark bites battle damage. There will be no chunks of flesh missing no more. Instead, they went for realism and little details and subtle damage. Dirt, blood, scratches, scars, bruises. All the little details. Look for Kotal Kahn's winning pose - the camera closes on him and you can see his wounds and bruises. But it's only open wounds blood leaking from and not large chunks of flesh with the muscles visible.

I like this new kind of battle damage a lot better.
