Wide Screen MK Deception: How To On The Xbox?

I've seen screen grabs from MKD with widescreen format on the net. The box says it can be switched so. The thing is, I configure the Xbox to watch games on this format, but it looks in fullscreen... I can't see it wide with a normal TV set (with black boxes on top and down screen) or I just need an HDTV widescreen if I want it widescreened???

I'll post the differences in a bit, but there is a difference if you switch to 16x9 mode in the Xbox menu.

NORMAL 4:3

See how the characters are bigger/take up more veritcal screen space in the Widescreen mode? It only is apparent because it zooms closer into the characters in 16x9 because more screen width to allow a closer zoom.

I know about the differences. The thing is, if I put a DVD movie in the Xbox it will be displayed in widescreen or, fullscreen if both enabled, on a normal TV set wich will look letterboxed (altough is really transmitting in widescreen mode)... Now, if this game allows both modes, just like it would do a DVD movie enabled so, why can't I see it in widescreen mode when I configured the Xbox to be viewed so? I mean, cinematic or panoramic view means 16:9 resolution for this hardware, right?

By the way, that picture is easly noticed is not widescreen, but streched to look like, I think the game really takes approach of this feature, or this is for real comparison, Patrick, if so I don't need to change it to this view.

First off there is a difference between letterbox and widescreen. That is a WIDESCREEN anaphoric shot. I didn't move the characters from their starting positions. Look close and see the difference in character size, etc. They are NOT the same picture.

When the Xbox (or any DVD player) is set in WIDESCREEN it compresses the screen data so the TV can uncompress it (stretch) to fit a 16x9 screen. So my TV card doesn't do that so I had to stretch it manually using proper math. But if you look at the differences all I changed was the Xbox screen mode.

Now all DVDs are usually anamorphic widescreen. Unless you buy a FULLSCREEN DVD. If you have the TV set to NORMAL and you have a widescreen/letterbox DVD the Xbox/DVD player will put it into LETTERBOX on your NORMAL TV, LETTERBOX is the addition of black bars. LETTERBOX is not really Widescreen.

Here is all three, the WIDESCREEN one I un-stretched so you can see that there is a difference in modes, look at the 16x9 next to the 4:3. Character placement and the edges of the screen are different. Look at the windows and the beetle glass in the back, in the unstretched 16x9 image they are skinnier than in the 4x3 mode because they are meant to be stretched by the TV, so the game draws the screen skinnier overall. Characters are too but not as noticable as the square objects like the windows/blocks in the back of the stage.

Ok, I know letterboxed screen is not really widescreen, my TV card does so and it only puts black boxes to a 4:3 screen resolution. Altough, when you have real widescreen you have a better horizon view of the scene on left and right sides of the screen.

Now, your second image, where the screen is set in 4:3 but showing a compressed originaly 16:9 images, and characters looking way to close to the sideds of the screen, is exactly as much my Xbox is doing as for 16:9 screen, instead of letterboxed, meaning widescreen but with black boxes (again, I know letterbox is NOT widescreen, just gave that example). So, the Xbox won't defenitevely have it wide for me as your thirth image, just like the second?

As for the PS2, there is a setting for widescreen or letterbox. I'm not talking about the option of the game. It doesn't do anything because I don't have a widescreen tv......yet.
Take Soul Calibur 2 for example. You have the widescreen option and it works on a regular tv set but the characters look strecth. It takes all the screen like a fullscreen.
It's not like the option that has the DVD widescreen though.

Just as I thought, and that sucks. I won't bother with that anymore, just set the system on normal aspect ratio; 4:3.
