The Difference Between Zoning and Spamming

Spamming: Unintelligently repeating the same special move (usually projectile/teleport) with no change in tactics depending on situations.

Zoning: Intentionally keeping distance/pressure on your opponent, either reading their style or forcing them into playing a certain way. Adaptive to close combat situations and able to make good on big damage opportunities.

Spamming requires no skill, where as zoning requires you to adapt and be tactical. A good zoning player will always create opportunities for themselves by keeping their opponent away from them as to gain control of the match, then adjust to their opponent's tactics/counters and act accordingly.

A spammer will, for all intents and purposes, continue to mindlessly throw projectiles or teleports at their opponent with no real strategy other than to hope that their projectiles/teleports will either not be blocked or connect successfully, and if they fail to connect the first, second, third, fifth, or tenth time, rather than change their strategy or adapt to the other's gameplay, they continue to use the same move, over and over again, or 'spam' so as to not actually fight or use combos, but to just keep using their specials to do damage and hopefully win the match.

Spammers are successful on a very low playing level, i.e. newbs (people with no real experience who just bought the game) or people with not enough training on how to counter this style of gameplay. Although most spammers will find themselves winning some matches, they will not win the majority of high level gameplay matches against either top tier players, high ranked players, or tournament players solely based on the fact that their style is deemed 'too predictable', and a good player will know how to counter the same move that's used against him/her repeatedly.

If your desire is to become a better player, to participate in tournaments, or to essentially be 'the best', then sticking with spam is going to get you nowhere. If you refuse to change your strategy or adapt to your opponent's gameplay, you are only setting yourself up for failure. Learning from your mistakes and learning to play better will always guarantee you more successful matches, where 'spamming' will only offer lower odds of winning matches the more players learn how to play the game.

Update: Zoning doesn't *have* to involve repeated moves at all. Zoning isn't just keeping your distance, it's about keeping within a very specific distance, which may not even be a half screen away. It might be just barely within range of a normal move. The idea is to establish this distance and keep it, because it limits your opponent's options and allows you to react more easily, giving *you* the control of the match.

100% agree. too many people have it stuck in their minds it's projectiles that are the only methods of zoning. using space to make your opponent whiff is also zoning. Aka Back dashing.

yep, your statement is 100% true, you put well the diference.

Some people confuse Zonning with Spamming, because, when a good zoner see that his zone game is working, and so, the opponent refuse to try to get away of zone pressure, refuse to change tactic and keep defensive, so, the zoner has no reason to change his tactic / strategy, he (zoner) is aware about to change his gameplay and take a more offensive behaviour in the match if the opponent is coming closer, but, if just in case the opponent keep accepting the zone game, so, it's wise to keep this until figure out that is not working.

What about those who spam to zone?

Check this yo,

I was fighting as Liu Kang and the other guy was noob saibot. he went on the far side of the screen, left a huge distance between us. Then he send running noob toward me if i jump, and sliding noob if i dash and block to move toward him. I couldnt really do dash low block because you are standing up when you dash and dont have time to crouch block because sliding noob is too fast. That was so freaking annoying because i couldnt teleport with Liu and block damages made lose both rounds! Kinda made wish that Liu counter was working for projectile to punish that dude...

Why are people so annoying! That's not spamming according to you it's zoning. Both are too freaking annoying and people doing that should be banned for 3 months...

It made me think of something that could be interesting to have in fighting game...Pressing the forward low diagonal to move forward but crouching...

So by your definition, when your opponent is far away standing still and just blocking your projectiles, you would go to him? Just because he blocks? Thats totally stupid... i would just throw more projectiles at him because i get meter and chip dmg is taking him down... its the better option with less risk than to run to him and try to go infight (epscially as noobsaibot) your definition is good about zoning etc. but that point is totally unlogical, sorry.

You are right with saying, you adapt to your opponent. if my opponent sucks and i can take him down easily with projectiles and nothing else, then 1. my opponent failed and sucks and 2. why should i do risks to take him down? Just for the "style"? If your opponents suck, then there is no need in doing fancy stuff, its that simple.

Lui Kang runs alwas towards me and is doing this one lame combo all the time, if i have no breaker i always recieve 15 hit kombos with the same combination, its so freaking annoying, people should be banned for 6 months by doing this. according to most people this is skill because he can hit 3 buttons in a row.

Well said Matt Wilson!

Imho that's a bad matchup for Liu.
Try to jump over sliding clones to approach Noob...you can also use flame dragon kick, which should have armor if I remember right.

Flame dragon kick! Didnt think about that one! Lets hope it has armor, will try it as soon as i get home.

Wow you will seriously never learn and honestly you are sounding like a hypocrite. How can you criticise liu kang players (like myself) for kombo spam than try to defend your own spam tactics. They are still putting in more effort than you because they are trying to get close and dish out bigger damage. LOL "why should i do risks to take him down" exact post from you so let me ask you this, why shouldnt liu kang players do the exact same tactic to take him down? "If your opponents suck, then there is no need in doing fancy stuff, its that simple"

Yeah...that's IF your opponent sucks. You're pretty much proving me right with everything you say.

Just for the "style"? If your opponents suck, then there is no need in doing fancy stuff, its that simple.

Yup, yup, yup. But yeah, if it works, then by all means go for it. If your opponent sucks and can't handle your constant barrage of spam, then again, go for it. But, when you start playing matches against better opponents, your logic seems to defy me a bit.

You are right with saying, you adapt to your opponent.

Then...

So by your definition, when your opponent is far away standing still and just blocking your projectiles, you would go to him? Just because he blocks? Thats totally stupid... i would just throw more projectiles at him because i get meter and chip dmg is taking him down... its the better option with less risk than to run to him and try to go infight (epscially as noobsaibot)

What's funny is never once did I mention running toward your opponent to create infighting....you're putting words in my mouth first off. If you're going to negative rep me, do so through logical reasons and intelligent conversation, don't be a troll about it. Second, I find it funny how to you say you 'adapt', but what happens when your clones fail and the guy is right in your face? Like ever Noob player I've spoken to so far, you seem to think that ones the clones + teleport fail, all hope is gone. Sure, you're not going to get pressing forward offensively, but when zoning through projecticles fails, you must always have a plan B, which WILL require you to learn his combos and yes, do some infighting when the opportunity presents itself. THAT is adaption, knowing that when all else fails, your combos, timing, and eventual zoning will lead to victory, not zoning, zoning, oh crap he's near me now, I'm doomed. That's not adaption. That's failure on an epic level.

It's my firm belief that Noob Saibot was designed as a zoning character, obviously, but not to a point where his strategy relies on 80% specials, 20% blocking. When your zoning fails, and sometimes it does, you have to know how and when to react. By implying that well-timed shadows are your only saving grace from being defeated, your talking like a loser.

Edit: That's the thing. Higher level players are going to know how to counter constant spamming of shadows, or 'zoning'. If you think spamming the same move is going to create any sort of space between you and the other person, you'd be wrong. Very wrong. As you stated above, if the person sucks, then yes it's going to work. But, when you're fighting against better players and it DOESN't work, then how do you adapt? Or do you just rollover and die? Face it, you won't be facing newbies forever. Eventually you'll be fighting better players, and that spam "im not really spamming, I'm just noob zoning" tactic won't work, and you'll be forced to reconsider your post.

I think he didn't mean it. He was just responding to the other guy's claim.
