MK Trilogy (N64 version)= Dissapointing

my old Playstation recently bit the dust(R.I.P.) So I didnt have a way to play Trilogy. Dont have a ps2 either. So I decided to buy the N64 version of the game to make up for it. When it finnaly arrived and I got to play it, I was really dissapointed at how inferior it was compared to the Play Station version. While I was already expecting it to be not as good, as Cartriges dont hold as much as discs, It still was worse than I expected.

The Stages in Ladder mode are always set in the same exact order, unlike the PS version where its random and better.

Music sounds like it came off of a SNES or Genesis Game, and the wrong music plays on all the levels. (Hell plays Subway theme, etc)

no alt costumes for certain characters

theres many other things wrong with this game, and the controlls feel a little wierd too. It is still playable and can be enjoyable, but only if you've never played the Playstation version before. Otherwise you should stay away from this game. Unless you feel as if you need to collect every single MK game ever made. Then I guess its ok.

Believe it or not, Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the N64 is the closest gameplay wise to Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 of all the ports. I know a lot of people are going to look at me like I've got three heads for saying that, but let me explain why:

When MKT was in development, they handed off the PSX/PC version to Avalanche - where the N64 version was done "in house" by Williams (who also published it). When Avalanche ported the game, they took the easy way out converting the audio/video; which is why the 22khz music sounds slower and lower in pitch. But by taking this shortcut, they also ported a 53hz refresh rate game to 60hz incorrectly, which resulted in an increase of about 10fps that actually ends up making the gameplay faster.

So despite it's missing frames and synthesized music that pales in comparison, gameplay wise it's the most accurate version of the ports. There's also quite a few remnants of the arcade code in the N64 version as well, and a recent leak suggests that MKT for the Playstation may have actually been based off the UMK3 3DO code, which itself was never released and ironically seems based off the PSX MK3.

That's probably the best way I could explain what happened with Trilogy, and it's exactly as confusing as it sounds.

I remember buying Trilogy for N64 the day it was released, I really wasn't disappointed with it at that time....that IS however, until I played it for Playstation...LOL Crisp graphics, CD quality sound, just a better port altogether HANDS DOWN!! :)

I loved my version of MKT for the N64. I also have it for the PS1.

I enjoy the N64 version better, I don't kare about graphics when it is an oldschool game. All the music in MKT is great anyway, so I don't kare if it doesn't have the korrect music. What I really like, is that the gameplay is much faster on the N64 version than the PS1 version. And gamepla is what I like the most more than everything else.

N64 ver. has some pros: adittional levels (e.g. The Pit 2 with sky full of stars), Khameleon, Rain's different victory pose, Shao Kahn & Motaro fatalities, unique combination of both Sub-Zeros...

The Deadpool in the N64 version looks pretty cool actually. Its red sky behind the barred windows.

Dont think there is a way to select the stage in VS mode though. If somebody else owns the n64 version, please let me know.

If you have an OK computer you could try an emulator. its a bit tricky to set up because you need the bios file and I doubt you have the equipment to extract it from your broken console luckily there are other means of procuring it.
Its great because you can control the speed, ever plat MKT turbo? I have, not as fun as it sounds.

Not many people know everything behind trilogy but this guy does. As much better as the character selection and controls are much better on PS1, it actually plays kind of horribly. The gameplay just feels incomplete and sometimes it's hard to even sit through the loading times to play. Trilogy for the playstation is my favorite game of all time strictly because of the characters and complete character data (like how classic sub and human smoke only had one fatality in UMK3 but 2 in MKT). I wish we could just get one remade port of this game similar to the upgrade in Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the ds. Anyone else play that? It plays so damn fresh. Gimme the rest of my characters from trilogy and my life will be complete.

I have MKT for the PSX never played the N64 version.
Now the guys at TYM are playing MKT on the N64 and i wish i had that version.
You have 3 on 3 and much faster gameplay and Super Sub :)

One thing the N64 version does better than the PSX one, and that is frequently overlooked whenever the N64 version is brought up, are the fatalities. So many of the finishers in that version are superior to the PSX versions, it's astounding.

Like Baraka's impale fatality. My god, the PSX version is pathetic and underwhelming. But the N64 version is downright brutal and sadistic. The opponent bleeds a great deal, and flinches a bit before actually going through the blades.

Or how about the Subway stage fatality. The opponent actually gets knocked backward when hit by the train.

Noob's teleport bounce fatality is funnier, as Noob bounces at much quicker speed (though there's sadly an annoying glitch), as is his ant-eater animality as the opponent screams when getting sucked in, as well as Human Smoke's friendship with that "owoah" noise that is heard when the "no smoking allowed" sign appears (he's quiet in the PSX version) and his stretching fatality is longer, and more brutal.

Yet other examples of better fatalities are those of the kombat tomb and the deadpool. The opponent doesn't even bleed in the PSX version, and barely makes more than a "ouch" noise when hitting the spikes, but both problems are solved in the N64 version. In the PSX deadpool's case, the opponent is merely uppercutted into the acid. No fatality theme even playing, and again, just an "ouch" noise" from the opponent. Johnny's shadow kick fatality is better than the backbreaker one, imo.

To conclude, another small thing the N64 version does better is Shao Kahn taunting his opponents when he wins. He doesn't do that in the PSX version. I do like the PSX version, and own both, but it certainly doesn't surpass the N64 version in every ways, imo.

Too i saw anything. Jhonny cage have more and better quality in his sprites than in psx version.

I am not a fan of mkt cage, cause is the worst cage ever on mk, but is other fact.

The first MK game I really played.

At first it creeped me out because of Goro's Stage in the intro with the skeletons. Then after seeing Jade and Sub-Zero perform their impalement fatalities, that's when I got excited about it. ;)

And I was only third grade. Lol

I originally had it on N64 and first thing I noticed was that it sounded like the speakers were under a pillow.

Rented it on PS1 a few weeks later and was blown away that a 32-bit game could be better than a 64-bit game, lol.

Atari Jaguar should have tought me a bigger lesson than it did.

MK Trilogy on 64 was my childhood so I can't complain. I'm sure I'd appreciate the PS1 version more if I had that instead.

Lol! I was even younger.
